Canadian universities would receive around two billion Canadian dollars to modernize the infrastructure of their campuses. It was announced by the Canadian government.
The latest fund, known as Strategic Investment Fund for Post Secondary Institutions would be offered to the higher education institutions from next years from now; it was declared previous week in the initial budget from the new Justin Trudeau led Canadian government. It will help around 50% of entitled cost of on projects for on campus infrastructure of the universities and affiliated organizations.
The government has also announced that that an extra 95 million Canadian dollars would be sanctioned for the nation’s research granting councils from this year.
As per the President of Calgary University, Elizabeth Cannon, she welcome the decision, the government understand that the universities are able to drive the economic stimulus and prosperity through these infrastructure projects, through research and by making sure that the skills they require.
She said that they are very much excited that the researchers and students would gain from the latest facilities of research and innovation and enhanced environmental sustainability.
The budget also includes many steps that are designed for making the higher education much more affordable for the students. From this year, the grants would be raised to 3000 from 2000 dollars for fewer income families, and would be raised to 1200 from 800 Canadian dollars for middle earning family students. Part time students would get 600 Canadian dollars yearly hike to 1800 Canadian dollars. These hikes were previously promised by the Liberal Party in its election promises last year.
The student loans repayment threshold would also be raised by 25000 dollars from 20,210 dollars. Previously the government had declared the changes to its law that would make easy for foreign students in gaining permanent residency of Canada.
