EU hopeful that the visa facilitation agreement with Azerbaijan will be effective in summer

According to news reports, the European Union (EU) is optimistic that its agreement for visa facilitation between itself and Azerbaijan will become effective in the summer of 2014. This statement was made in front of journalists on May 19 by Malena Mard, who was heading the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan.

She also told journalists that the association for agreement and the supplementary contract to it are also in the negotiation stage. The two entities had signed a ‘visa facilitation agreement’ at the European Union summit in Vilnius, in November 2013.

Azerbaijan had entered into an formal agreement seeking readmission into the European Union on February 28.

When the visa facilitation rules come into effect, a visa application by an applicant for a EU visa may take 10 days to be processed. If in case of an emergency, the decision may take two days or less. The cost of a visa application is 35 euros.

The signing of this ‘visa facilitation and readmission agreements’ program is  part the EU's Eastern Partnership program which is intended to foster closer cooperation of the EU with six former Soviet republics – Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Georgia.
