Merger of PIO,OCI cards on cards!

The NDA Government is all set to take forward the proposal of the then UPA Government over the merger of two important cards that are issued to Indians living outside the country. The sources close to the prime minister’s office have said that the government has decided to merge PIO card (persons of Indian origin) into OCI (overseas citizen of India) card.

The sensational move was in line with the proposal taking by the UPA-2. However, due to several other internal issues that the kept UPA busy and other unsaid reasons, the government then was unable to implement the proposal.

The sources have also said that Modi is likely to make this statement when he addresses the Indian community in Madison Square of the United States.

It has to be mentioned here that PIO cards were issued to Indians who have been staying in foreign countries for centuries while OCI cards were issued to the recent immigrants who took the citizenship of other countries recently.  While OCI card holders can enter India and stay here as long as they wish, PIO holders can’t stay beyond certain time. With this merger, PIO card holders would be entitled to the same benefits of OCI card holders.
