Migration authorities of BRICS nations meet at first ministerial meeting

First ministerial meeting of head of migration authorities of BRICS nations was held in Russian city Sochi. All the head of migration authorities of BRICS nations i.e. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa were present at the meeting. 

Indian Union Minister Kiren Rijiju who also attended the meeting said that though India does not have the controversial migration issues with the BRICS nations, India should facilitate easy travel to the Indians to the BRICS countries through less restricted visa regimes.

The minister said that the issue regarding migration in the BRICS nations is such that they are playing an important role in the chain of world migration. Every nation is used as a source or destination, and it is being also used as the launching pad for moving to some other countries.

The Minister also observed that the flow of migration in this present scenario is unstoppable. He also said that there is a need to make this issue more transparent, orderly and safe by taking steps like campaigns for awareness to be held for promoting the legal migration, resource centers setup, organizing programmes like pre-departure orientation and skill development for the migrants.

Mr. Kiren Rijiju also said that India has taken steps for streamlining the process for formal migration. He also said that in this direction, the Indian government has currently launched an e-Migrate Project and the clearances of migration are now being facilitated through online process. The effort has been made for improving the transparency and the efficiency in the system and it will also help in checking any malpractices.

Efforts have been made to look after the Indian emigrants interests in many different countries; the Minister says that the Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry has entered into an agreement of Social Security with 19 countries.

More effort has been put for having agreements for social security with many more countries so that the interests of Indian emigrants in different countries are taken care of properly. He added.

He termed the Head of BRICS migration authorities joint declaration as step taken in a positive way for building the framework towards a smooth, transparent process for migration administration. He said that with the mutual cooperation, these member nations can be benefited by migration of the people and they can be better equipped for dealing with migration issues.
