E-Verify is a free online service used by more than 500,000 companies which allows these employers in the United States to verify their new employees’ ability to work.
Acting Director of US Citizenship and Immigration and Services, Lori Scialabba, said that since its start, E-Verify has improved by way of increased accuracy, and experienced high customer satisfaction and exponential growth. Primarily, participating in E-Verify is voluntary and the fact that 500,000 companies signed up shows the confidence in the program. E-Verify helps employers to maintain their legal workforce in a secure, quick and perfect way.
Employers using E-Verify get a reply on the work authorization status of an employee within seconds. 99.8% of it is automatically confirmed instantly or well before 24 hours for work-authorized employees, which means that there is no more any requirement for more action by employer or employee. In the American Customer Satisfaction Index survey 2012, users have given a score of 86 out of 100 for E-Verify. For all the government agencies, the average score is 67.
To strengthen the integrity of this system, USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration and Services) has worked for many years. With its efforts, E-Verify has reached agreements with the departments of motor vehicles of some select states to make sure the legitimacy/authenticity of the driver license used by an employee as ID credentials can be used for ‘self check’ by prospective employees, thus allowing them to know their employability status and make necessary correction before they seek out new employment. This program thus fights identity fraud wherever there is suspicion regarding it and prevents employment through fraudulent means by locking the social security numbers.
Since its institution in 1996, E-Verify has seen noteworthy growth. During the first sixteen years, enrollment for this program has increased tenfold, yearly. During fiscal year 2013, E-Verify was used more than 25 million times.
