In a bid to boost the Tourism sector in the state, the central government is planning to launch visa on arrival (VoA) facility at the International Airport of Tiruchi .
The Tiruchi is present in the list of non-metro airports where the facility is set to be launched. The extra airports include Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Varanasi, Gaya Amritsar and Lucknow. The modalities were being implemented with regards to the foreign nations for which the privilege is put forth to be launched. Nonetheless, indications are the facility is outlined for ASEAN nations.
Prior to its launch, an initial joint inspection would be organized at the airport by high-level authorities on 7 April 2015. The team comprised of authorities from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, National Informatics Centre, Immigration, and overseen by eminent authorities of the airport.
Throughout the one-day inspection, the team would determine the facilities currently being provided at the airport and the required infrastructure that is required before the launch of the facility. The Tiruchi is the 2nd airport followed by Chennai in Tamil Nadu from where foreign carriers are managed to foreign places such as Singapore, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and Colombo.
International tourists make up most passengers handled at the Tiruchi airport, which was considered as the best among non-major airports in 2014 at the time of the quality services survey.
Airport authorities stated that after the launch of the new facility, foreign travellers with an approved return ticket would be offered visa on arrival at Tiruchi by the immigration officials.
It is expected that the facility would boost tourism not only in Tiruchi but also in Tamil Nadu. The facility would also increase revenue for the airport, which is a developing at a faster pace in the country.
Sources stated that extra infrastructure would be introduced at the airport, mentioning that the Central government would take a final call on the launch of the facility. Moreover, required facilities including sophisticated shopping are set to introduce at the airport.
