Bulgaria-Romania talks with Canada on visa-free travel

European Commission will mediate the consultation process between Bulgaria-Romania and Canada on the permit system. The meeting will discuss on Canada lifting visa sanctions on Bulgaria and Romania.

The Commission warned that it will not ratify the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada if Ottawa fails to lift visa requirements for Bulgaria and Romania. 

The meeting will be hosted by European Home Affairs Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos on July 11 in Brussels. Bulgarian Deputy Interior Minister Philip Gounev, Deputy Foreign Minister Roumean Alexandrov, Romanian prime minister’s chancellery, Ioan DragoÈ™ Tudorache and Canada’s immigration minister John McCallum. 

Technically both the countries are eligible for the visa-free travel to Canada. They have insisted on resolving the issue before the EU-Canada summit in the month of October 2016. 

Canada Immigration Minister will be in Brussels from July 10 to 12 to express his stand on the visa policy based on the reciprocal system.
