Indian students in US universities registered 32% since last year

According to latest official figures, the number of Indian students pursuing education in universities and colleges of US has increased by 32% when compared to 9% increase of international students in the last year.

The quarterly report stated in “SEVIS by the Numbers” on the international students pursuing studies in the USA, is also a part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of US government. 


The report claims that among the all international students, 76% students are from Asian countries. The list of top countries includes China, India and South Korea. 

India tops the list of increased number of students in the US compared to last year with the percentage of 31.9 followed by Vietnam’s 25.9% as per the SEVIS figures of July 2014.

In total, china contributes the largest number of students in USA with 3, 00,000 students followed by an approximate 1, 50,000 students from India.

The US universities that ranked among top five list are The University of Southern California, New York University, Columbia University and the University of Illinois and Purdue University with most number of the international students.

Currently, there are 1.5 million of international students who are granted with F visa and M visa to pursue the education in USA. Among of them, there are 4, 05,314 students who are pursuing education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the US.

About 86% of the international students from Asia are studying STEM coursework.

The report mentions that most of the international students are studying the engineering, 29% of engineering students come from India.  

The report also added that 81% of the Indian students are in STEM field, which is the highest figure for any country.
