Large number of Indian students are enrolling in Master Degrees in the US

The recent report has revealed that the demand for the master degree is strong. But it also suggests that the selectivity at the many of graduation institutions in the US showing the demand for their brand should not outstrip the supply.

Indian students are enrolling in the master degrees in large numbers as the US is the foremost choice of Indian students who seek to study in the US and the demand from India is extremely slanted towards the master degree offered by the US universities. At the same time there is an increase in demand from the Indian students who want to enroll in the undergraduate level.

Around 86% of students from India who apply to the graduate schools of the US choose master degree as their main objective. India and China both constitutes 79% of all the demand for the master degree in the US. The dominance of the demand from both nations is indicating that the institutions in the US should proactively broaden their horizons and prepare for luring the students from the emerging markets.

Over 3,08,000 students had applied for the mathematics, engineering and computer science programs. These programs have a strong advantage when compared to other fields with the OPT programs, an alternative that permits for extra 17 months of job opportunities for the overseas students and stays a big draw for the students from India.

In general, around three-quarters of the demand for the master degree in the US coming from the computer science, engineering, business and mathematics programs. Master degree commands a strong desire among the foreign students, and has been clearly seen as the desire for the two broad streams like business and engineering from the two nations India and China.

The institutions in the US should innovate and experiment to avoid the overdependence and strengthen the competitiveness.
