Express Entry Immigration Option and Facts about Principal Applicants

The Option of Express Entry

Candidates send the Express Entry profile to get assessed on the CRS based on human capital like work experience, age, education, and language proficiency. The top-scoring candidates get the invitation to apply for permanent residence in regular draws of Express Entry. The processing time for applications is six months. Married candidates can select which one of them can enter the pool and be the principal applicant. The other partner becomes the accompanying spouse.

The age of the candidate is an important factor in the ranking. After completing 29 years, candidates start losing points.

The factors of language proficiency and work experience, in Canada, count towards additional points in comparison to age. Meghan Markle has worked in Canada for many years as a TV series actor. She studied French for six years, necessary to get points in French language proficiency. The Canadian work experience is a valuable factor, but not all work counts for points. The work experience of self-employed is not counted in the candidate’s score.

Hypothetical Scenario - 1

One year of skilled and eligible, work experience in Canada and intermediate French

A married candidate, 38 years old having the bachelor’s degree, and one year of Canadian work experience, plus three years of skilled work experience outside the country, advanced English language capability in four abilities as well as intermediate French in four abilities and married to a person of 35 years having advanced proficiency in the English language will get a CRS score of 480, when the wife is the principal applicant. The score was enough to get the ITA in draws held in the past year.

Scenario 2

Three years of Canadian work experience, but no knowledge of French

A married candidate, 38 years old having a bachelor’s degree, and Three years of Canadian work experience, plus three years of skilled work experience outside the country, advanced English language capability in four abilities as well as intermediate French in four abilities and married to a person of 35 years having advanced proficiency in the English language will get a CRS score of 471, when the wife is the principal applicant. The score is enough to get the ITA.

Scenario 3

No Canadian work, advanced French level, the husband does not accompany her

A married candidate, 38 years old having a bachelor’s degree, and three years of skilled work experience outside of Canada, advanced English language ability in four abilities plus Advanced French in four abilities besides the non-accompanying husband will get a CRS score of 446. This was enough to get the ITA in draws held earlier in 2019. In the recent draws the least CRS was higher.

The case when the Canadian work experience of a candidate is not counted for CRS

Provincial nominee programs are a fine option if the work experience of a candidate in Canada is not counted for CRS.

After September 2019, the CRS requirement in Express Entry was above 460. A bilingual candidate with a score of 446 is in a good place to get the provincial nomination. Such candidates open to start their life in Canadian provinces become eligible to take part in PNPs aligned with the Express Entry.

Ontario as well as Nova Scotia issued invitations to bilingual candidates in Express Entry last year.  In case of the candidate obtaining the provincial nomination there is an award of 600 extra points in the CRS.

Furthermore, there are PNP streams aligned with the Express Entry not requiring bilingualism. Depending on the place these candidates look to immigrate, there are Express Entry aligned streams to increase their score.
