Tamils seek asylum in Australia

In a welcome move taken by the Australian government, at least 157 Tamil asylum seekers would be permitted to reside at Cocos Islands situated in Australia. The move has reportedly evoked mixed response although many eminent politicians welcomed the move.

The Australian immigration minister Scott Morrison confirmed this news to the media today. He has said that 157 Tamil asylum seekers were found on board a custom’s vessel.

Upon their arrival to Australia they would be sent to Curtin detention centre, which is on the south of Derby. It has to be mentioned here that  after six months, an asylum seeker boat is set to arrive in Australia. Reports indicated that this decision was taken after wide range of consultations with the Indian Government.

The officials reportedly mentioned that negotiations would be initiated with the Sri Lankan government too as the asylum seekers were holding Sri Lankan citizenship.
